Top Ten Lessons Steve Jobs Can Teach Us

The article conveys that Steve Jobs is the best CEO ever.  There are lessons that he can teach us about great leadership in a highly successful organization.  From the lessons listed, Steve Jobs “wants the best from himself and everyone who works for him.”  He is a leader that serves others, which is the definition of ethical altruism (Ch. 15).  Steve Jobs mentors, empowers subordinates, and team builds his organization because he cares so much and wants to see the organization succeed along with the individuals that have helped him along the way.  I can agree with this because after he is gone, his followers will still have his ideas and values that they can take with them to innovate the future.  Furthermore, not only did he motivate others, he motivates himself to show his followers that they can succeed “through hard work, determination, and sense of vision.”  These were some of the characteristics that led to the success of Apple after almost going bankrupt.  Furthermore, Jobs surrounded himself with many “talented” minds and by respecting them, he allowed them to be themselves and think creatively.  This is what helped integrate the needs, values and purposes of Jobs’ followers with his own needs, values and purposes.   I agree with respecting people because they can contribute new ideas and thoughts to a group which can benefit an organization in the long run.  By doing this, Jobs and his followers were able to make Apple into a highly successful business.

How would you feel about working with Jobs? Do you think his leadership style led to the success of Apple?

  1. Steve Jobs is a leader that I would enjoy working for. He's an individual who commands great respect and ultimately wants his employees to succeed. According to the situational approach, I believe Steve Jobs uses the coaching style for his leadership. This may be controversial because Steve Jobs is known for not being the nicest man to his employees. He can be very stern and even yell at his employees occasionally. However, I feel he is doing this for a reason, to achieve success.

If an employee does not come to work prepared, he doesn't want anything to do with them. Steve Jobs wants to get the best out of his employees anyway possible. Using the Mumford skills model it is easy to see why Steve is so successful. He has excelled individual attributes, such as high general and cognitive abilities that he was born with and acquired over time. What makes Jobs so special is his passion and motivation. He has a clear vision and he will not quit until he achieves it. Although he may lack some social judgment skills, he excels in problem-solving skills and is very knowledgeable about his business.

As a result, Steve Jobs has put together a very powerful company. Apple has experienced incredible success and remains a strong force today. When Jobs retired, shareholders were unsure if anyone could prove to be a successor of Jobs. His leadership style cannot be imitated. Without Steve Job's leadership, Apple would not be as successful today.

  3. I think Steven Jobs is one of the greatest leaders out there. He has done so much for Apple and for the computer industry itself. I would love to work for Steven Jobs because of how hard of a worker he is and how he treats his employees. I feel that ethical altruism is one of the best ways to lead a group of people. Jobs knows that if his workers are treated right then they will work harder and accomplish all of the goals that they need to. It is hard to argue with how Jobs leads because of how successful Apple is now. Apple is one of the greatest innovators in computers and hopefully will keep growing. Now that Jobs is gone, hopefully his successor will lead in the same way and keep Apple growing and growing. Jobs was a great leader and did magnificent things for Apple.
